How to get a proper Thai massage in Thailand?

This is not actually an instructional post, but a genuine question: How do I get a proper Thai massage in Thailand??

I was extremely disappointed with the massages I got in Thailand, not for the cost of course. When an hour massage in America is over $60 and in Thailand it is around $10, it is hard to argue, but my expectations were not met. Having had a Thai massage in China and having been told that they were extremely painful, I was disappointed with how soft mine were. I suppose it makes sense for them to soften it for tourists, but I really wanted a real massage and never got one.

I’ve also been told that the massage school next to the Wat Po, which is surprisingly hard to find, has really good ones, but on our one day in Bangkok they were closed on holiday.
